What is BEE Certificate?
BEE stands for the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, a government body functioning under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. The organization promotes energy conservation and encourages the use of energy-efficient products and systems across the country.
One of the key responsibilities of BEE is to develop standards and labeling programs for electrical appliances. Under this program, products are assigned Star Ratings based on their energy performance and electricity consumption. Higher star ratings indicate better energy efficiency and lower power consumption.
Why Does a Product Need a BEE Rating Certificate?
BEE Certification helps consumers understand the energy efficiency and electricity consumption level of a product. The certificate and Star Label indicate how efficiently an appliance performs while consuming power, enabling consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.
The main objective of BEE is to create awareness regarding energy conservation and establish a structured system for energy-efficient products throughout the country. It also supports industries in reducing energy consumption and improving operational efficiency.
- Demonstrates energy efficiency level of a product
- Provides information about electricity consumption
- Helps consumers make informed purchasing decisions
- Encourages manufacturers to develop energy-saving products
- Supports the country's energy conservation goals
- Ensures compliance with the Energy Conservation Act, 2001
Benefits of Certification by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency
Standards Compliance
BEE Certification ensures products comply with prescribed energy efficiency standards and performance requirements established by the government.
Regulatory Compliance
Helps manufacturers and businesses comply with the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 and related regulatory requirements.

Environmental Impact
Energy-efficient products reduce overall energy consumption, contributing to lower carbon emissions and a greener environment.
BEE Standard and Labelling Program
Under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, BEE launched the Standards and Labeling Program in 2006. The main purpose of this program is to inform consumers about the energy-saving and cost-saving capabilities of electrical appliances and equipment.
Products are rated on a scale from 1 Star to 5 Stars, where 5 Stars represent the highest level of energy efficiency. The program also establishes Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) to prevent the sale of products that consume excessive electricity or fail to meet minimum required performance levels.

Process for BEE Certification
Before applying for BEE Registration, applicants must first determine whether their product falls under mandatory or voluntary BEE certification categories. The process involves three main stages:
-
1Step 1: Product Testing The BEE Registration process begins with product testing to determine the product's energy consumption and efficiency level. Applicants must submit product samples and technical documents to a NABL-accredited laboratory. Performance Testing evaluates energy efficiency for Star Rating assignment, and Safety Testing ensures consumer safety and product reliability for products covered under BEE and BIS requirements. The test report is mandatory during model registration.
-
2Step 2: Brand / Company Registration Applicants must collect all required documents, register the brand on the BEE portal, and pay the applicable security deposit online. The application is submitted both online and offline to the BEE department, signed by the Authorized Signatory. BEE officials scrutinize the submitted application and documents for completeness and compliance. After approval, BEE provides Login Credentials via email, and the portal link for Model Registration becomes active.
-
3Step 3: Model Registration All relevant documents and technical details must be uploaded on the BEE portal along with performance and safety testing reports. Based on test results, a sample BEE label is prepared. Applicants submit the application online and offline along with registration fees, signed documents, and sample labels. BEE officials review the entire submission, and upon satisfaction, approval is granted and the applicant receives authorization to use the BEE Label.
