Process of Assaying and Hallmarking of Gold/Silver Jewellery

   Step 5: Cupellation Process Samples are heated in a muffle furnace at approximately 1100°C for around 25 minutes. Lead gets oxidized and released as fumes, while impurities are absorbed into the cupels, leaving behind a purified alloy of gold and silver.

   Step 6: Parting and Hallmarking After cupellation, a bead-like alloy containing gold and silver is obtained. Nitric acid is used to dissolve silver from the alloy, leaving behind pure gold for accurate purity assessment. Once verified, the jewellery is stamped with the BIS hallmark and assigned a unique HUID number.
