Overview

What is E-Waste?

E-waste, also known as electronic waste, refers to discarded, damaged, outdated, or non-functional electrical and electronic products. It includes items such as mobile phones, laptops, computers, refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, printers, and other electronic equipment that have reached the end of their useful life.

E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. With the increasing use of electronic products, the quantity of e-waste is also rising rapidly. Electronic waste contains harmful substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, brominated flame retardants, and other toxic materials. When e-waste is disposed of carelessly, these hazardous substances can pollute soil, water, and air — affecting the brain, kidneys, bones, reproductive system, and endocrine system.

💡 Important: Proper collection, recycling, reuse, and disposal of e-waste is necessary to reduce environmental damage and protect public health. EPR Registration is mandatory for all producers, manufacturers, and importers dealing in covered electrical and electronic equipment.

What is E-Waste Management?

E-Waste Management is the process of collecting, transporting, recycling, reusing, treating, and disposing of electronic waste in an environmentally safe manner. The main purpose of e-waste management is to reduce the harmful impact of electronic waste on the environment and human health.

Proper e-waste management helps in recovering valuable materials from old electronic products and reducing the use of fresh raw materials. It also prevents toxic substances from entering the environment. Businesses must follow proper waste management practices to ensure legal compliance and sustainable development.

EPR Registration for Manufacturers and Importers

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a legal responsibility placed on producers, manufacturers, importers, and brand owners to manage the end-of-life stage of their products in an environmentally sound manner. For electrical and electronic equipment, EPR Registration is mandatory for businesses involved in manufacturing, importing, selling, or placing such products in the Indian market.

The EPR Authorization is issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Under the E-Waste Management Rules, producers and importers are responsible for the collection, recycling, and proper disposal of e-waste generated from their products. They must work with authorized recyclers or dismantlers and submit an EPR plan to CPCB.

E-Waste Management Rules, 2022

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the E-Waste Management Rules, 2022 on 2 November 2022. These rules came into effect from 1 April 2023.

Products Covered Under EPR Registration

EPR Registration is mainly required for electrical and electronic equipment covered under the E-Waste Management Rules. These products are broadly divided into the following categories:

Common products include computers, laptops, printers, mobile phones, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, fluorescent lamps, routers, UPS, inverters, CCTV cameras, projectors, solar panels, LED products, electric fans, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, medical equipment, and other electronic products listed in Schedule I.

📌 Businesses dealing in these products must check the applicable EEE code and average life of the product before applying for EPR Registration.

How to Apply for EPR Authorization
